Once the end arrives, and once it has fled, and once the final credits crawl across the screen and the curtains close and the houselights come up, the audience should not feel uplifted, not superior, not virtuous, but humbled. Each viewer should be left with a sense of his status as one more wretched sinner. Each should be reminded of his own humanity. There should arise within each member of the audience that what has transpired on the screen is really about him.
